Kelly's story

My name is Kelly and this is my journey as an adult learner.

“Being a single mum with two children I decided I needed and wanted a career, so with the help of a lot of people and new opportunities I am now working in a wonderful job.

My story first started when I got some help from Ali at the Library with getting my driver’s licence. When the Hub opened, my youngest daughter spent lots of time learning at the Child and Family Centre, and I started doing courses with the Adult Learning team. I’ve done Get Active and Planning and Playing with Kids, and some skill sets like First Aid and Barista training. I’ve worked my way through the Community Services certificates and have now got my Certificate III. I have learnt that to get where you need to be, you have to study hard, get along with people and children and also love what you do.

Throughout my study I have volunteered at the Hub to help with catering for events and adjunct care for children. I was asked to co-facilitate Planning and Playing with Kids in its second year. All of this was great experience to put on my resume, which Sophie helped me put together. I have now started to get some relief hours at the Hub and at Port as a Teacher’s Assistant in Kinder to Grade 2. I love my job and the people I work with and so I now look forward to bigger things.

I have received so much support from everyone at the Hub to get where I am today. This time last year I never thought I would achieve what I have this year. My family are so proud of me for working so hard and have seen a difference in me. So my advice is to go for what you love and be happy. Don’t try and do it on your own, always ask for help even if you think you can’t do it, keep trying.

Life is what you make it!”
