Plain English and 26Ten
26Ten supports plain English. The way we use language can be a barrier to taking part in work and everyday life, especially for people who have lower literacy skills. Everyone benefits when writing is free from jargon and complicated sentences. Key information including instructions or requests should be at the top of any communication.
Putting the reader first
A communication is in plain English if its wording, structure, and design are so clear that the intended readers can easily:
- find what they need
- understand what they find
- use that information.
26Ten supports Tasmanians to use plain English
We offer practical workshops around Tasmania and plain English tools.
Plain English Workshop
Information that isn’t presented clearly creates confusion and can lead to misunderstandings, missed opportunities and mistakes.
Learn how to make information easier to understand in 26Ten’s practical plain English workshop. Practise writing and presenting information clearly using your own documents.
26Ten’s experienced trainers will lead you through the five steps to clear communication using slides, videos, writing and interactive activities.
This skills-based workshop runs for three and a half hours. Participants receive a copy of Communicate Clearly: A guide to plain English from 26Ten and the 26Ten plain English workbook.
