Clarence Plains 26Ten Community's story
Parents, Families and Carers – Learning for our Kids: a 26Ten Community Project, Hobart City Mission, Clarence Plains
The Clarence Plains 26Ten Community is a group of local residents, organisations and community groups, called One Community Together (OCT), who have partnered with Hobart City Mission to become a 26Ten Community. The Community project is focussed on helping parents, families and carers improve their reading, writing and maths skills, so that they can better support their children’s learning.
As a group, OCT has regularly consulted with the community over the last five years to learn that:
- most residents see low literacy as a problem in the community
- many residents don’t know where to go to get help
- the community wants better educational outcomes for their children.
Parents with low literacy often lack the confidence to help their children. They lack the skills to read with their children and later to engage with their education.
How does the Clarence Plains 26Ten Community work?
The Clarence Plains 26Ten Community supports parents and carers to improve their reading, writing, spelling and maths skills. This gives parents and carers the confidence to support their children’s learning.
The 26Ten community coordinator, works in the Clarence Plains Child and Family Centre, and provides literacy and numeracy programs tailored for caregivers of school-aged children in the Clarence Plains area.
By improving their literacy parents and carers are better able to:
- read to and with their children
- help their children with school work
- feel more confident engaging with their child’s education
- understand school reports more easily.
Clarence Plains 26Ten Community received a communities grant in 2020.

Tom's path to literacy
“You know you want to do something about it and that now is the time to do it. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or how young you are, but … once you’ve started you get the confidence that you, y’know, that you can, and it builds up from that, it just builds up and builds up.”

"This is a place that [inmates] can come, that will be safe, where they will be respected and where we do have something to offer them."
