Family fun with letters and numbers
This 26Ten Week, we are highlighting the importance of family literacy and numeracy.
Our theme, Family fun with letters and numbers, highlights how families playing, singing and reading together supports children’s development of literacy and numeracy skills.
Learning is fun! And by learning together, parents and carers are setting a great example for their kids. Whether cooking with measurements, playing boardgames, or counting number plates, engaging in fun and educational activities together fosters a love for learning that will last a lifetime.
Why is family literacy important?
Family literacy is an important part of raising literacy levels in Tasmania. When parents and carers have the confidence to support their children’s learning, children achieve better outcomes. 26Ten works with adults to build their literacy and numeracy skills, so they can support their children’s learning.
What can you do to celebrate 26Ten Week?
- Have a 26Ten morning tea and give people the opportunity to talk, listen and interact.
- Have some family fun with letters and numbers by playing boardgames such as Snakes and Ladders or Monopoly. Games are a great way to learn together as they build reading and writing skills, make everyday maths fun, and help improve problem-solving skills.
- Head into your local library or 26Ten community to play some boardgames.
- Print 26Ten’s Snakes and Ladders gameboard (PDF, 826KB) and dice and counters template (PDF, 894KB) to play at home!
- Encourage friends, family and colleagues to engage in family activities at home that involve literacy and numeracy skills, for example, cooking together or solving puzzles.
- Download the below resources, such as a Facebook tile or email footer, to use during 26Ten Week.

Improving literacy in parents and carers improves literacy in children, and this flows on to our communities and workplaces.
26Ten Week runs from 21-27 October 2024. This year’s theme – Family fun with letters and numbers – celebrates the importance of literacy and numeracy for the whole family. By improving their own skills, parents and carers gain the confidence to better support their children’s learning.
Family literacy and numeracy are essential for a child’s success. When parents and carers get involved – whether it’s reading together, cooking with measurements, or playing boardgames – they’re setting a great example and fostering a love for learning.
26Ten supports parents and carers to build their literacy and numeracy skills so they can support their kids. We are proud to be a part of the 26Ten Network – let’s all work towards a Tasmania where everyone has the literacy and numeracy skills they need to thrive in work and life!
