Celebrating getting people online during 26TEN Week 2016

Tasmanians are invited to celebrate 26TEN Week from Monday 24 October to Saturday 29 October.

This year, 26TEN, Tasmania’s campaign for adult literacy and numeracy, is focussing on the theme, ‘Read, write, count – online’.

26TEN Manager, Sue Costello, said we need to support Tasmanian adults to get online, particularly those with low literacy.

“Many Tasmanians aren’t online because they don’t have the literacy and numeracy skills needed in a technology rich world,” she said.

“Online services are quick and convenient, if you know how to use them. If you already struggle with reading or writing you miss out on those benefits. You may even miss out on some services completely.”

“We can’t assume that everyone can fill in online forms, we know many people can’t. 26TEN is working to change that by raising people’s literacy and numeracy skills. We also need to make sure people are supported in an approachable and engaging way, so they don’t miss out on services.”

If you or someone you know would like to build your literacy or numeracy skills call 1300 00 2610 or email@26ten.tas.gov.au.

3 things you can do to help during 26TEN Week

  1. Understand that low literacy holds many Tasmanians back from getting online
  2. Help someone get online or like us on Facebook and Twitter and use #26TEN
  3. Tell 3 people about 26TEN and encourage them to become a supporter

We hope everyone gets involved in 26TEN Week and appreciates that letters and numbers really are the tools for life, including our modern digital lives.
