Clarence Plains 26TEN Community

The Clarence Plains 26TEN Community is a group of local residents, organisations and community groups, called One Community Together (OCT), who have partnered with Hobart City Mission to become a 26TEN Community. The Community project is focussing on helping parents, families and carers improve their reading, writing and maths skills, so that they can better support their children’s learning.

As a group, OCT has regularly consulted with the community over the last five years to learn that:

  • most residents see low literacy as a problem in the community
  • many residents don’t know where to go to get help
  • the community wants better educational outcomes for their children.

Parents with low literacy often lack the confidence to help their children. They lack the skills to read with their children and later to engage with their education.

How will the Clarence Plains 26TEN Community work?

The Clarence Plains 26TEN Community will work by supporting parents and carers to improve their reading, writing, spelling and maths skills. This gives parents and carers the confidence to support their children’s learning.

A Project Officer, working in the Clarence Plains Child & Family Centre, will provide literacy and numeracy programs tailored for caregivers of school-aged children in the Clarence Plains area.

By improving their literacy parents and carers will be better able to:

  • read to and with their children
  • help their children with school work
  • feel more confident engaging with their child’s education
  • understand school reports more easily.

We look forward to hearing about the progress of this project!

Clarence Plains 26TEN Community received a communities grant in 2020.
